What if someone gets injured at my house this holiday season?

Denver home insurance questions answered

If someone is injured at your house, there are two coverages that potentially come in to play: medical payments and personal liability. Medical payments will pay up to the policy limits (typically $5k) for anyone injured on your property, no questions asked. If treatment for the injury is greater than $5k, then your personal liability coverage comes into play. However, negligence by the policyholder must be proven in order for this coverage to pay out. Be safe this holiday season!

Why work with an independent insurance broker?

Independent insurance brokers vs. the captive agent model

Insurance rates are unlikely do go down, so when you get a rate increase, what does your agent do? If you are working with an agent that only has access to one company, they are probably crossing their fingers and hoping you don't notice. That is not customer service.
At Longevity, we rerate every client that sees more than a 10% increase. If we are able to find  you a better rate, then we switch you over with no hassle to you. That's not just the right thing to do, that's the Longevity Guarantee.

I had a kitchen fire at my apartment, and now my landlord wants me to pay. Am I covered?

Denver renters insurance questions answered

Renters insurance comes with a coverage called personal liability.  Liability will pay to fix damage that you cause, and is a covered loss such as fire or flood. The coverage will also pay for injuries sustained by a guest on the premises that are considered to be your fault.

If you don't have renters insurance, you may be leaving yourself open for a HUGE judgement. Give us a call today for a quote.

What are the most important coverages on a condo policy?

Colorado home insurance questions answered: Condo insurance

Condo and townhome policies are different than a regular home policy, mainly because there is typically an HOA policy that covers the exterior of the structure. Here are the 4 most important coverages when insuring a condo/townhome:

1. Dwelling coverage- although there is a policy covering the exterior of the building, you are still responsible for the drywall in. Dwelling coverage pays to repair drywall, flooring, and appliances damaged from a covered loss.

2. Personal property- covers all of your furniture, clothes, electronics, and other property that is not permanently attached to the structure.

3. Loss assessment- if the HOA decides to put a new roof on the structure, they will often issue an assessment to the homeowners. This coverage pays your portion.

4. Personal liability- if someone is injured at your home, or you cause damage to your neighbors unit, this will pay for the damages.

Why do people get life insurance? What does it pay for?

Obviously this is a subjective question, but here are some of the main reasons people get life insurance:
1. To pay off the house
2. Get rid of any outstanding debt from credit cards, car loans, student loans, etc
3. Paying for college
4. Income replacement
5. Leaving a legacy

No matter what the reason, if you have people that depend on you, life insurance is a MUST HAVE!

What's the difference between a full service brokerage and someone that shops insurance for you?

Longevity: how we are different

Many agencies simply find you an insurance package, sell it to you, and are never heard from again. Here are three reasons why we are different:

1. Rerating at renewal- All renewals are carefully examined for increases. At that time, we rerun you quotes with all of our carriers to make sure you are still getting the best deal.

2. Claims assistance- sometimes filing a claim isn't the best idea in the long run. We provide council on whether or not filing a claim is the best move, and act as an intermediary between you and the insurance company.

3. Changes and questions- if you need to make a change or have a question on your policy, you always contact us, not a call call center in a different state. We are local, experienced, and here to help.

Combining service with price. That's the way we do business!

If my HOA levels an assessment, does my condo insurance pay for it?

Colorado condo insurance questions

If damage is done to the building from a covered loss such as hail, fire, or wind, "loss assessment" coverage comes in to play. It will pay your part of the assessment up to the coverage limits, and normally only costs a few dollars per year.
Unfortunately for condo owners, coverage does not extended to assessments caused by wear and tear issues, such as needing the parking lot repaved or the building repainted.

Colorado home insurance questions answered: dog bites

Am I covered if a friend drives my car?

Colorado auto insurance question: am I covered if my friend drives my car?

Auto insurance always follows the vehicle, so even if your friend doesn't have insurance, you can still let them drive your car. Be warned, however, that if they get into an accident that is there fault, not only will you be stuck paying your deductible, but your rates will most likely increase at renewal.

What is an umbrella policy?

What is an umbrella policy?

Everyone knows that your home and auto insurance policies come with liability coverage. But what if you are faced with a lawsuit that exceeds the amount of your coverage? That is where an umbrella policy comes in.
For between $200-$300/year (typically), you can add an additional $1M in coverage on top of your home, auto, rental property, or boat insurance to protect against catastrophic losses. In the insurance world, there is no better bang for your buck than an umbrella policy.

Colorado glass coverage

Colorado glass coverage: are you protected?

Did you know the average windshield costs between $200-$300 to replace? It's even more if you drive a large truck or SUV. With windshield coverage, insurance companies pay for the replacement (less a small deductible, typically $50), and will pay the entire bill for a repair.
Colorado has the most instances of windshield damage per capita. Do you have this important coverage?

Colorado home insurance saving tips

3 quick tips for saving on home insurance:

1. Go with a higher deductible- Companies look at the number of claims you have had when determining rates, not how much was paid out. If it doesn't make sense to file a lot of claims, it doesn't make sense to have a really low deductible.
2. Review every 1-2 years- Most companies raise your coverage every year automatically, even though the reconstruction cost of your home has gone down
3. Make sure that you get a quote with both your spouse and yourself as the primary: Companies take credit into account. If your wife or husband has better credit than you, it is probably cheaper to have it in there name.

What should I do if I am in an accident?

Here are some quick tips:
1. NEVER admit fault. Even if it was mainly your fault, the insurance company could still assign partial blame to the other driver
2. Call the police, unless you are on private property because they won't come
3. Take pictures of the damage
4. Get all pertinent information at the scene, such as drivers license, license plate, and insurance information. Also exchange phone numbers
5. If you believe the other party to be at fault, you file a claim with their insurance company, not the other way around.
6. Call your agent
